NOTES
1.Catalogue de la Bibliothèque Paulmy, Arsenal Mss noo 6279-6302. Note especially Arsenal Mss noo 6295, pp. 11-13, noo 5302. This is a list of d'Argenson's family manuscripts which were deposited later in the Bibliothèque Louvre rather than the Bibliothèque Arsenal. Many of René Louis d'Argenson's manuscripts were in this collection which was destroyed in the fire of May 23-24, 1871.

Rathery established this date based on d'Argenson's reference to a manuscript copy of a work in Pensée sur la réformation de l'Etat. In an entry dated 1733 d'Argenson writes "Première idée de l'admission de la démocratie dans le gouvernement monarchique, dont j'ai fait une traitè à part." Also see Jannet ed. Mémoires et journal V.

11. Pierre Renouvin, Les assemblées provinciales de 1787. Orgines, développement, résultats. Paris, 1921. p. 32, fn.4. Renouvin states that Zévort had identified d'Argenson's handwriting in this particular manuscript. Zévort does not identify the specific manuscript when discussing the matter.

II, 480-481. These manuscripts are listed by Brette, Ogle, Hintze, Ritter, Gesler. Brette p.382 mistakenly lists the series as' Nos. 2334,2336 et 2337'. Hintze based his information on Brette. He makes the same mistake. The authenticity of these manuscripts is verified by Ogle p.175. A German translation of Mss 2337 with a lengthy introduction has recently been published. It is Rene Louis d'Argenson, Politische Schriften (1739) , Rene Louis Marquis d'Argenson: ubersetzt und kommen tiert von Herbert Homig, Munichen, 1985.
21. These manuscripts were circulated to and read by d"Argenson's friends. Noteworthy are the reactions of Voltaire in 1739 and the references to d'Argenson's work in the 1762 edition of Rousseau's Le Contrat Social.
22. Neil Johnson, "L'Ideologie", p. 22, fn.3 .

27. Zévort pp. i-ii. Zévort identifies the manuscripts only as copies of Traité de politique.
28. Ogle p. 175, fn.416.
29. Brette p. 382. Brette lists the manuscripts as 'Nos 2334, 2336(sic) and 2337 '.
30. Hintze draws his bibliographical information from Brette and repeats many of the errors.
31. Renouvin p. 31, fn.2
32. Gesler p. 81 and p. 210.
33.Elie Carcassonne, Montesquieu et le probleme de la constitution française au XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1927. pp.45-50 uses Mss C which he believe not to have been a rough draft but a finished copy circulated by the author in 1737. Furthermore, Carcassonne draws attention to the "Boulainvillier" under title. Carcassonne may here be following the incorrect statement made by Brette (Brette p. 382) and repeated many years later by Hintze. The Boulainvillier under title appears on the title page for all three manuscript copies identified here. N. Johnson in his Louis XIV uses Mss C along with the printed edition of 1764. See Johnson p.148 and 271.
34. Gesler p.81 states that the manuscript is undated

65.. See Rathery I, v. This was also reported by Rathery in "Mémoire sur les idées morales, économiques et politiques du marquis d'Argenson, tirées de son journal et de ses manuscrits inédits," Séances et travaux de Sciences Morales et Politiques XLVIII, pp. 454-55. This article (pp. 451-464) and the follow up article Ibid., XLI, pp. 111-136 are almost verbatim the comments made in the "Introduction". See also Tassin, C., "Un membre de l'Academie de l'Entresol: le marquis d'Argenson." Extrait from Correspondent CXXXIII (1883), pp.16 f.; Gesler p. 81, fn.6 in giving sources for the 1752 manuscript cites C.A. Sainte-Beuve's article on d'Argenson in Causeries du lundi (XII, 1855, p.151), Sainte-Beuve's essay written four years before Rathery's work does not refer to this manuscript. Franklin L. Ford in Robe and Sword also cites in his footnotes a 1752 Paris edition of the work although his direct quotations from the Considérations are from the 1764/1765 edition.
66. See TEXT p. 1. The epigraph from Racine's Britannicus is: Que dans le cours d'un regne florissant/ Rome soit toujours libre et César tout-puissant!

Oxford, 1989. p. 324 attributes two (the third and fourth) of the quotations to other possible writings--possibly Pensee sur la réformation de l'Etat. The first quote (CS I, chap. II, V, II, 25 n.2) is almost identical to TEXT p.13; the second quote (CS II, chap. III; V, II, 42 n.2) is very similar to TEXT p.26; the third quote (CS II, chap. XI, V, II, 62,n.1) shows numerous changes from TEXT pp. 19-20; and the fourth quote (CS IV, chap. V, V, p.131,n.2 shows major change from TEXT p. 63. Vaughan incorrectly sees this quote as an abbreviation of a series of statements from TEXT pp.18-20.
72. Ford dates the publication is from 1754 ; this is also the date used by Brette and Hintze.
73. Prussichen Staatsbibliothek lists the 1764 edition in Bibl. Diaz Oct. vc4217. It also lists a 1765 edition in Pn 3538 which is tied to Mémoires pour servir a l'histoire de la barbe de l'homme, Liège, 1774. This copy does not carry the name of the author. The title page vignettes differ. This basically agrees with what I find in I and Ib. See Hintze p.613.
74. See above for I and Ib. In addition the copy of the 1764 edition in the Bibliothèque Nationale carries the following hand written notation on the page facing the title page. "J'y a des Exemplaires qui portent un titre réimprime sans nom d'auteur et avec la date de 1765."
